Bahrain is well thought rain. it's a country in the near. The persian gulf is situated between qatar and saudi arabia. So during laugh one of the race It was getting a little bit ship either. A lot of people You know going all over the track then. A huge incident happened One of the drivers for the haas racing team Roman grow john. Something happened with his car. Kind of veered out of control a clip into another driver daniel viet and Roshan's car spun out of control. Hit one of the metal trails. The car split in half and erupted into a gigantic fireball. Now this isn't the nineteen seventies or whatnot. Where where fires really common. Fires almost never happened these days in one because they have the fuel tanks now made out of kevlar. There are so many safety features just for the gas tank. You know that never happens anymore. So the fact that the exploded was huge. Second as as i mentioned the car split in half which we found out later was actually done by design because it helps dissipate some of the force because just a brief lesson. I guess in how the car's designed it's basically they call it a a survival pod. If i remember correctly it a car like a halo or something yes. I'll get to that in a sec. So basically it's like a cocoon sort of around the driver and then the cars built around that this little pod if you will Is designed to everything else can break away. Except that that has to stay intact. The drivers strapped in their with like six point. Harness got something called the hans device which is A little something that goes over the shoulders that attach is into something that's connected to the car. It has these little straps that are connected to the back of the helmet This was invented after dale earnhardt's accident in two thousand two When he died because leaves his neck snapped or something happens because it looked like a pretty harmless crash but the angle that he came into the into the barrier caused something to happen with his neck and he'd died so this hands device was Designed to prevent that kind of keeps it a little more Someone described as like an airbag for the head So and then on top of that like francisco mentioned. There's something called a halo. This is only introduced in twenty eighteen. But if you look at a formula one car pre two thousand eighteen versus now you'll notice there's kind of two Not a canopy. But it's something that goes in front of drivers. Had it connects behind the head to the car wraps around in front. And then there's a kind of a segment in the middle That connects it to the car in front and what this was designed to do. It was first introduced after An accident back in two thousand fourteen involving driver named jules bianchi two crashed into a a crane vehicle that was lifting another car that had crashed and it basically hit.

He hit his head on the car And unfortunately died not immediately but it was a few months later. He was in a coma But what the halos designed to do is as a little bit of extra protection for the driver's head because any objects more than likely will hit that i Before it hits him. So i'm sure i could have if i had known i would've gotten more high quality images from getty but by the way you can still see the big the fact that he survives a fricken miracle right so what saved him was will anyway. I'll get away from the safety stuff really. I what happened. When the car went into flames he was trapped in there for about seventeen seconds. Someone timed it out now. Goodness the sued. They wear the helmet and all the suits that they wear with. The exception of the hands is designed to is rated to survive fire for twenty seconds and the drivers are trained to be able to unseat harness themselves and get out of the car in ten seconds. They go through that training regularly. You know he was able to get out and seventeen seconds which is pretty fast considering that he sustained fifty three gs of force going into the barrier and that the car the front part of the car was wedged inside of the barrier and it was on fire so seven seconds. Delay is not too bad. Here's where it was as much as it was luck. There was so much that went rights for one thing on the first lap of the race. There's always a medical card. It's kind of like a safety car. that follows the pack since this happened on the first lap that car was still on the track and it raced up to him immediately and they got to him within ten seconds. Maybe so that's huge. That's one two. There were marshals people who monitor the trap from the side. Basically second that the car went up they were across the road. with fire extinguishers and they got started maybe within ten seconds and then big story was The two people that were in the meta to the people that were in the medical car was driver driver. That's that's not really their job to go toward a flaming wreckage and one of them actually reached into the fire and pulled outgrow john and eventually sat him down When he basically collapsed once it was clear the vehicle it was unbelievable and that and the thing is Sorry one other thing he probably would have died if the halo wasn't there the reason why is if you look at a picture of it of that front portion of there's the pictures there's a still image of the person reaching and grabbing him out the the barrier hit the halo. So let's i'm gonna pull up an image of the hair here. yep so. The barrier crashed into the left portion of the barrier or of the halo if in that arrested the movement that stopped it. And if you look that is right directly on the head if that if that halo is not there that barrier hits him square in the side of the head and he used dead basically. He was going how fast he was going. One hundred thirty seven miles per hour into that barrier a steel barrier going hitting your head at one hundred thirty seven miles per hour. Geez and the strange thing is this might be his last race in formula one because he is not contracted with team for next season. So you know you'd hope that he would be able to find a seat somewhere but you just don't know yeah But no matter what happens you know he. He's truly a survivor. And you know the entire racing world is there is a good image of the halo right there. You can see kind of that black mark. That's where the that's where the The barrier hit the funny thing is back when the halo was first introduced. A lot of people didn't like it even even he said he was skeptical of it Because it it kind of ruins the flow of the look if you will pizza vision a little bit too. It's right in front of you but you can't end there. There was an incident Earlier this season actually. Maybe it was last season where tire directly hit. It was a flying tire. I think it was the season. Hit the halo. Which again if the halo was there. There's a god knows how heavy tire and rim hitting us square in the helmet at one hundred something miles per hour. You don't survive that so this is really kind of be first graphic incident where you see how necessary the halo is and it's universal at this point that it's not it's needed the the halo was necessary. So any doubters you because you know. Sometimes it's like If you don't see any issues with something it's like oh we. I guess overrated. We don't really need it And then it goes away and then all of a sudden you take it away and then you truly needed it here.
